Start with the effects already in FaceTime
During an active FaceTime video call, click your video tile or the Video button in the Mac menu bar. Use Portrait, Studio Light, Center Stage, Reactions, or Background when those controls solve the problem. Add a virtual camera only when you need beauty filters, full-frame color looks, detailed image controls, stronger privacy effects, or the same appearance in other apps.

Built-in FaceTime effects or Xamera?
Choose the smallest tool that provides the result you need. You do not need another app for standard Portrait blur, Studio Light, Center Stage, Reactions, or a supported virtual background.

Best for quick framing, lighting, reactions, and backgrounds
They are integrated into macOS, require no extra camera source, and are the simplest place to start.

Best for beauty controls, custom looks, image control, and privacy
Xamera processes the physical camera first, then FaceTime receives the finished feed through Xamera Camera.

A Xamera color look can work with a FaceTime framing feature, but stacking two background or lighting effects can create unnatural edges.

What Xamera adds to FaceTime
Xamera is useful when FaceTime's built-in controls stop short of the look or privacy behavior you want. Configure the feed in Xamera, then select Xamera Camera from FaceTime's Video menu.

- 1Install Xamera on a compatible Apple-silicon Mac and complete its camera-extension setup.
- 2Open Xamera, choose your physical camera, and configure the beauty filter, camera look, background, or privacy effect.
- 3Open FaceTime and start or join a video call so its Video menu becomes available.
- 4In the Mac menu bar, choose Video, then select Xamera Camera from the camera list.
- 5Check the FaceTime preview and make final adjustments in Xamera before the call matters.
FaceTime filter limitations
- Apple's available effects vary by camera, Mac model, and macOS version.
- Xamera requires Apple silicon and macOS 15.0 or later.
- FaceTime must be allowed to select Xamera Camera, and the Xamera camera extension must be enabled.
- Using two versions of background segmentation or lighting at once can make the image look overprocessed.
- Always review the final FaceTime preview rather than relying only on the Xamera preview.

Does FaceTime have filters on Mac?

Can I use beauty filters in FaceTime on a Mac?
Yes. Configure Face Studio in Xamera, complete the camera-extension setup, and choose Xamera Camera from FaceTime's Video menu.
Why is the Video button missing?
The Video button normally appears in the Mac menu bar while FaceTime or another compatible app is actively using the camera. Start a video call and make sure the camera is on.
Why does Xamera Camera not appear in FaceTime?
