Virtual camera for Mac: what it is and how to use one

A virtual camera is software that appears as a webcam

It takes a physical camera or a composed video scene, processes it, and exposes the result as another camera source. In a destination app, you select that source—such as Xamera Camera or OBS Virtual Camera—instead of the built-in webcam. The destination app receives the processed feed in real time.

Virtual cameras share an output mechanism, but they solve different problems. Decide whether you need camera enhancement, full scene composition, or only the effects already built into macOS.

How to set up a virtual camera on Mac

  1. 1Install the virtual-camera app and approve the camera and camera-extension permissions it requires.
  2. 2In the virtual-camera app, choose the physical camera or scene you want to send.
  3. 3Configure the effects, framing, scene, or privacy behavior and check its preview.
  4. 4Open the destination app and select the virtual camera from its camera settings.
  5. 5Check the destination app's final preview, then keep the virtual-camera app running during use.

Virtual-camera limitations on Mac

  • The destination app must expose a camera selector; otherwise no virtual camera can be chosen.
  • Camera extensions may require approval in System Settings and the destination app may need to be reopened afterward.
  • Resolution and frame rate depend on the input camera, virtual-camera app, and destination app.
  • Running multiple effects or scene processors can increase CPU, GPU, and memory use.
  • Always verify the destination preview because it is the feed other participants or viewers receive.

What does a virtual camera do on a Mac?

It lets software process a physical camera or composed scene and present the result to another app as a selectable webcam source.

Does a virtual camera replace my physical camera?

No. It normally uses a physical camera or software scene as its input. The virtual camera is the processed output selected in the destination app.

Why is my virtual camera not listed?

Finish the camera-extension setup, approve required permissions, keep the virtual-camera app open, and restart the destination app. Also confirm that the destination app provides a camera picker.

Is Xamera the same as OBS Virtual Camera?

They use the same general virtual-camera concept but serve different jobs. Xamera focuses on camera enhancement and privacy; OBS focuses on composing complete scenes from one or more sources.
